Steve March Torme

Mel Torme with Steve and CandySteve March Tormé was born in New York City to the multi-talented Mel Tormé and the former model, Candy Tockstein. They were divorced when Steve was two-and-a-half years old. Shortly thereafter, Candy married the actor/ comedian, Hal March, who was the host of NBC-TV's The $64,000 Question Show and subsequently starred in Neil Simon's Come Blow Your Horn on Broadway.

pop rock bandAn avid baseball fan growing up in Westchester County, N.Y., Steve started listening to games on the radio in the basement of their home where, almost by accident, he discovered his love for music. Following every game he tuned in music stations and found himself singing along with such artists as: The Four Seasons, Nat King Cole, The Orlons and especially The Beatles. By the age of 12 he knew that he wanted to be a performer. He began to develop an affinity for harmony and earned his first paycheck at 13 playing in his own band. After moving to Beverly Hills he continued to entertain at parties and functions throughout his years in high school.

Following the death of his stepfather, Steve rekindled his relationship with his father, Mel. Even growing up apart from his father he soon realized they had a great deal in common, sharing a love for music and live performance. Steve struck up friendships with other second-generation "show biz" kids like Desi Arnaz Jr., Dean Martin Jr., Miguel Ferrer, Carrie Fisher, and Liza Minnelli with whom he would later end up working.

Steve March's first album, Lucky.

In the late 1970s Steve recorded his first LP, Lucky, for United Artists Records supporting it with a well received 20-city concert tour. Upon returning to California he had the opportunity to produce and sing on the Columbia Records release, Tropical Nights, with his friend, Liza. The CD remains a favorite today in New York dance clubs.

Name That TuneHoning his craft as a performer Steve worked as an actor playing the male lead in a European mini-series for RAI Television, and appeared on numerous variety television shows including Dinah and The Merv Griffin Show. He spent two years as the featured vocalist on ABC-TV's $100,000 Name That Tune and also hosted two Los Angeles-based television shows, Video 22 (a precursor to MTV) and Box Office America.

On the recommendation of Quincy Jones, Steve was tapped to be one of the three-featured singers for the vocal group, Full Swing, which had its debut release on Planet Records. The group successfully toured the United States, Brazil and Japan. Shortly after his return from touring the globe Steve left the group in order to focus on solo opportunities. The next development in his blossoming career was the release of Swingin' at the Blue Moon Bar & Grille featuring a playful duet of "Straighten Up and Fly Right" with his father, Mel.

Steve March Tormé todaySteve has delighted audiences in everything from intimate jazz clubs to festivals and performing arts centers across the country. Currently he is touring the country in promotion of his latest CD, The Essence of Love. This album contains some of the most romantic, well-crafted standards ever written including Blue Skies, Stardust and a sparkling duet with icon Diane Schuur.

Steve has a variety of shows including a rousing tribute to Mel, Tormé Sings Tormé, featuring the extraordinary Dektette arrangements Marty Paich penned exclusively for the Velvet Fog. This multimedia presentation features never before seen photos and video clips of Steve and Mel performing together.

Steve March Tormé is not just following a legacy… he's clearly starting one of his own. His voice has been described as "seductive" and "effortless". His song-writing style combines a wry sense of humor with a timeless sense of classic melodies.
